Climate-Neutral Agriculture?

چکیده

Regarding the achievement of worldwide agricultural climate neutrality, focus is on a net-zero emission cradle-to-farmgate greenhouse gases (GHGs), while, when appropriate, including biogeophysical impacts practices longwave radiation balance. Increasing soil carbon stocks and afforestation have been suggested as that could be currently (roughly) sufficient to achieve neutrality. It appears in both cases quantitative contributions neutrality can actually delivered are very uncertain. There also much uncertainty about benefits with regard forest conservation, changing feed composition reduce enteric methane by ruminants, agroforestry use nitrification urease inhibitors decrease N2O. case for future work aimed at reducing present uncertainties. The replacing animal husbandry-based protein production plant-based GHG emissions 50%, technically feasible but variance trends food consumption. major effort reverse these trends. Phasing out fossil fuel inputs, improving nitrogen-use efficiency, GHG-emission fertilizer inputs rice paddies cut current 22%.

concentration of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) by some 30 percent since the industrial revolution, and that rise continues at a rate of approximately 0.4 percent per year. Despite its seemingly minute concentration (only 0.035 percent), CO 2 inhibits the escape of longwave (thermal) radiation emitted by the earth throughout the entire atmosphere, a process known as the “greenhouse effect.” The presenc...

Climate Change and Agriculture Reconsidered

Despite the existence of a large and growing literature on the potential impact of climate change on agriculture, there still exists some disagreement about the magnitude and even the sign. Our own research suggests that the impact on U.S. agriculture is likely to be strongly negative, based on a series of studies in which we link farmland values to climate variables, and crop yields to both cl...

Assessing Climate Change Impacts: Agriculture

The economy-wide implications of climate change on agricultural sectors in 2050 are estimated using a static computable general equilibrium model. Peculiar to this exercise is the coupling of the economic model with a climatic model forecasting temperature increase in the relevant year and with a crop-growth model estimating climate change impact on cereal productivity. The main results of the ...

Climate Change, Agriculture and Poverty

The Policy Research Working Paper Series disseminates the findings of work in progress to encourage the exchange of ideas about development issues. An objective of the series is to get the findings out quickly, even if the presentations are less than fully polished. The papers carry the names of the authors and should be cited accordingly. The findings, interpretations, and conclusions expresse...
